Case study: SeaGen Installation Vessel

Client Marine Current Turbines
Date March 2009 - Ongoing
Location Skerries, Wales

The project required the design of a vessel which would be suitable for deploying a drilling assembly on site and provide a stable platform from which to perform drilling operations in high current conditions: in order to reduce installation cost as much as possible, the vessel will be capable of concurrent foundation drilling.

The vessel is configured as a twin pontoon barge with a double gantry spanning two pontoons. Equipped with an eight point mooring system the barge is able to cope with the demands of high current and poor holding conditions. The lifting tackle is operated by four winches and has a total maximum lifting capacity of 900Te.  The extensive lifting capacity of the barge also allows the vessel to be used for the main foundation structure installation.

The multi functionality of the vessel allows its utilization to be maximized in any tidal or wave device deployment, reducing cost and time scale on offshore projects. The construction of the vessel is currently out to tender and it is proposed to deliver the vessel in Q3-2011.
