Case study: Bauer Renewables Monopile Installation
| Client | Bauer Renewables |
| Date | July 2011 |
| Location | EMEC |
In late July, Bauer and Mojo Maritime successfully combined drilling expertise with offshore experience to install a novel 2 metre diameter monopile foundation structure in a tidal race. Using a dynamically positioned vessel, the foundation was installed to schedule at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) for client Voith Hydro. An exceptional challenge was posed not only by the drilling works at a water depth of 37 metres, but also by the extremely strong currents of up to 4.5 meters per second.
Mojo Maritime and Mojo Ocean Dynamics were intimately involved in the design process of the drill and support components to ensure it was suitable for offshore use. Mojo conducted the operational planning, oversaw charter of the installation vessel, and managed all marine operations including heavy lifting with the vessel's 400t crane.
The umbilical handling system, drill storage frame and Launch and Recovery System (LARS) were designed by Mojo, and the subsea operations were extensively modelled using industry leading software to ensure the operation was technically feasible.
Bauer Renewables and Mojo Maritime ran a Foundation and Installation Seminar at the Renewable UK 2011 event in Manchester.
